About Book & Scroll Memorials
A book or scroll memorial is one of the most distinctive and meaningful choices available. The open book is a universal symbol of knowledge, faith, and the story of a life — while the scroll evokes classical tradition and permanence.
The wide, flat surfaces of a book memorial provide more space for inscriptions than a standard headstone, making them an excellent choice for families who wish to include a longer verse, poem, or tribute alongside the name and dates.
We craft book and scroll memorials in all our standard granite and marble colours, and can add carved detail to the spine, cover, and page edges to create a truly lifelike effect. Gold and silver leaf finishes are available for the lettering.
Book memorials are permitted in most traditional cemetery sections. We will advise on the regulations at your chosen cemetery and ensure the design meets all requirements before any work begins.
Styles Available
Open Book
Two facing pages, either flat or slightly angled, providing a generous writing surface. The most popular book memorial style.
Closed Book
A single volume with a spine and cover detail — a more compact form that still carries the symbolism of a life's story.
Unfurled Scroll
A rolled parchment effect, often with curled ends. Elegant and distinctive, with a classical feel.
Book on Plinth
An open book mounted on a raised plinth or base — adds height and presence to the memorial.
Book with Kerb Set
A book headstone combined with a full kerb surround — a complete and dignified memorial for a full grave space.
Inscriptions
The two-page layout of an open book memorial lends itself beautifully to a range of inscription arrangements — name and dates on one page, a verse or tribute on the other. We will help you plan the layout to make the most of the available space.
We offer hand-cut V-section lettering, sandblasted lettering, and laser engraving in a wide range of typefaces. Colour-filled lettering and gilded finishes are available.
