Memorial Mason — County Durham

Harbour Memorials provides bespoke headstone design, installation, and memorial services to families across County Durham — from Durham City to Consett, Stanley, and the former mining communities of the Durham coalfield.

Headstones & Memorials in County Durham

County Durham has a proud and deeply rooted community spirit, and the care that families here give to their loved ones’ memorials reflects that. At Harbour Memorials, we are honoured to serve families across the whole of County Durham — from the cathedral city of Durham itself to the former mining towns of Stanley, Consett, and Spennymoor, and the market towns of Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle.

We work with Durham County Council’s bereavement services team on a regular basis and are fully familiar with the regulations governing memorial installations across the county. We handle every permit application on your behalf, and we will always check the specific regulations for your chosen cemetery before finalising the memorial design.

County Durham’s cemeteries range from Victorian municipal grounds in the larger towns to small village churchyards with their own distinct character and regulations. We have experience working in all of these settings and will always advise you honestly on what is achievable in a particular location.

We offer the full range of memorial types — from traditional polished granite headstones and kerb sets to natural stone, slate, and bespoke carved memorials. Every commission is treated as an individual project, and we will work with you to create a memorial that truly reflects the person you are remembering.

A selection of memorials we have recently designed, installed, or restored for families across County Durham.

A traditional full-size lawn headstone in polished black granite with a hand-cut gold-leaf inscription. The family chose a simple, dignified design in keeping with the cemetery's character. Permit obtained from Durham County Council.

A heart-shaped headstone in polished pink granite with a laser-engraved floral design and a bespoke verse chosen by the family. Installed to current BRAMM safety standards.

A full granite kerb set with grey granite chippings, installed alongside a new headstone. The family also requested a matching granite vase and a small solar light fitting.

A second name, date, and short verse added to an existing polished black granite headstone. The new lettering was matched to the original cut and gilded to the same standard.

A county shaped by coal — and community
A county shaped by coal — and communityCounty Durham’s identity was forged in the coalfields. The former pit villages of Stanley, Consett, Spennymoor, and dozens of others have a deep sense of community, and the care that families here give to their loved ones’ memorials reflects that. We are proud to serve these communities.
Durham City — a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Durham City is home to one of the finest Norman cathedrals in Europe, and the city’s cemeteries sit within a landscape of considerable historic significance. We work in Durham City Cemetery regularly and are familiar with the regulations and sensitivities that apply.
