General Council Regulations

The following rules apply across all South Tyneside Council cemeteries. Individual sites may have additional requirements — see each cemetery below.

All memorials must be installed by a council-approved stonemason

A permit must be obtained from the bereavement services office before installation

Kerb sets are permitted in traditional sections only — not in lawn sections

Timber, plastic, and fibreglass memorials are not permitted

Foundations must comply with the NAMM Code of Working Practice 2015

Memorials must not exceed the maximum dimensions for the section

Artificial flowers may be placed temporarily but must be removed after 4 weeks

Memorials must not be installed within 12 months of burial

Harton Cemetery

Established

1879

The principal municipal cemetery for South Shields, Harton Cemetery is a large, well-maintained site with both traditional and lawn sections. It is the cemetery we work in most frequently and we have an excellent working relationship with the on-site staff.

Some well known local people are buried here including members of the Readhead family, Captain Richard Annand VC and the family of James Simpson Kirkpatrick

Important Notes

All memorials must be installed by an approved mason. Foundations must comply with NAMM Code of Working Practice. Lawn section memorials are restricted to a single upright headstone with no kerb sets.

Boldon Cemetery

Established

1872

A quieter, semi-rural cemetery serving the Boldon communities. The site has a traditional character and the council maintains strict standards to preserve its peaceful appearance.

Boldon Cemetery operates a strict approval process. Designs must be submitted to the bereavement services office before any order is placed. We handle all submissions on your behalf.

Jarrow Cemetery

Established

1869

Serving the Jarrow community, this cemetery has a mix of Victorian-era graves and modern lawn sections. The council has specific requirements for the newer sections to maintain a uniform appearance.

Important Notes

The cremated remains section has reduced size limits — maximum height 900mm. Kerb sets are not permitted in the lawn section. All inscriptions must be approved prior to installation.

Hebburn Cemetery

Established

1995

A well-kept cemetery in the heart of Hebburn, with a range of grave types. The site is managed by South Tyneside Council and follows the same general regulations as other council cemeteries, with some site-specific requirements.

Sections Available

Important Notes

Garden of Remembrance plaques must conform to the council’s standard size and fixing specifications. Upright memorials in this section are not permitted.
