General Council Regulations

The following rules apply across all Gateshead Council cemeteries.

All memorials must be installed by a Gateshead Council-approved stonemason

A permit must be obtained from Gateshead Bereavement Services before installation

Kerb sets are only permitted in designated traditional sections

Timber, plastic, and fibreglass memorials are not permitted

Foundations must comply with the NAMM Code of Working Practice 2015

Memorials must not be erected within 12 months of burial

Artificial flowers may be placed temporarily but must be removed within 4 weeks

Memorials must not exceed the maximum dimensions for the section type

Saltwell Cemetery

Established

1905

Adjacent to the famous Saltwell Park, this is Gateshead’s most historic cemetery and contains some outstanding Victorian and Edwardian memorials. The council applies careful heritage-sensitive regulations to preserve the character of the site. The cemetery also has a designated Muslim section.

Important Notes

Saltwell is a Grade II listed landscape. All new memorials must be sympathetic to the Victorian character of the site. The council may require additional design approval for prominent positions. We have extensive experience working within these requirements.

Gateshead East Cemetery

Established

1862

A large, well-maintained cemetery serving east Gateshead and the Teams area. The site has a mix of traditional and lawn sections with clear, consistent regulations.

Garden House Cemetery

Established

1916

A traditional cemetery serving the Whickham community, with a pleasant semi-rural setting. The site is well maintained and the council applies standard regulations with a focus on preserving the peaceful character of the grounds.

Important Notes

The Garden of Remembrance at Whickham has specific plaque dimensions. Upright memorials are not permitted in this section. We will advise on the correct specification for your chosen area.

Blaydon Cemetery

Established

1907

Serving the communities of Blaydon, Winlaton, and Ryton, this cemetery has a traditional layout with a well-kept lawn section added in the 1970s. The council applies standard Gateshead regulations across the site. The cemetery ha special sections for babies and children.

Important Notes

Blaydon Cemetery has a particularly active Friends group and the grounds are maintained to a high standard. The council expects all new memorials to complement the existing character of the site.
