General Council Regulations

The following rules apply across all North Tyneside Council cemeteries. Individual sites may have additional requirements — see each cemetery below.

All memorials must be installed by a North Tyneside Council-approved stonemason

A permit must be obtained from bereavement services before installation begins

Kerb sets are permitted in traditional sections only — not in lawn sections

Timber, plastic, and fibreglass memorials are not permitted on any section

Foundations must comply with the NAMM Code of Working Practice 2015

Memorials must not exceed the maximum dimensions for the relevant section

Chippings and gravel infill require prior council approval

Memorials must not be installed within 12 months of burial

Preston Cemetery & Tynemouth Crematorium

Established

1856

One of the oldest and most distinguished cemeteries in North Tyneside, Tynemouth Cemetery contains a wealth of Victorian and Edwardian memorials. The site is a conservation area and the council applies strict standards to ensure new memorials are sympathetic to the historic character of the grounds.

As a conservation area, Preston Cemetery and Tynemouth Crematorium has additional design guidelines for memorials in the older sections. We will advise you on the specific requirements for your grave location. All memorials must be installed by a council-approved mason.

Whitley Bay Cemetery

Established

1894

A well-maintained cemetery serving the Whitley Bay and Monkseaton communities. The site has a mix of traditional and lawn sections and is managed to a high standard by North Tyneside Council’s bereavement services team.

Important Notes

The cremated remains section has reduced size limits — maximum height 900mm, maximum width 600mm. Kerb sets are not permitted in the lawn or cremated remains sections.

Churchbank & Holy Cross Cemetery

Established

1879

1918

Serving the Wallsend and Battle Hill communities, this cemetery has a strong working-class heritage and a warm, community feel. The council maintains consistent standards across the site and the bereavement services team are helpful and responsive.

Important Notes

Garden of Remembrance plaques must conform to the council’s standard size specification. Upright memorials are not permitted in the Garden of Remembrance section.

Earsdon Cemetery

Established

1856

A historic village cemetery with a peaceful, rural character. Earsdon Cemetery contains some notable Victorian memorials and the council takes care to preserve the traditional appearance of the site. It is a smaller cemetery and the council applies careful scrutiny to new memorial applications.

Important Notes

Due to the historic character of the site, the council may request design amendments to ensure new memorials are in keeping with the surroundings. We recommend allowing additional time for the approval process at this cemetery.
