Headstone Restoration & Cleaning
A Memorial Deserves to Endure
Even the finest granite or marble memorial will, over time, show the effects of the elements. Lichen and algae take hold, inscriptions become shallow and difficult to read, and the stone itself can become stained, chipped, or structurally compromised. For many families, visiting a grave that has fallen into disrepair is deeply distressing.
Restoration is not simply a cosmetic exercise. A memorial that has become unstable poses a genuine safety risk, and one that is heavily soiled or illegible no longer fulfils its purpose as a lasting tribute. Our restoration service addresses all of these issues — from structural re-fixing and specialist cleaning through to inscription re-cutting and lead infill — returning the memorial to a condition that honours the person it commemorates.
We work on memorials of all ages and stone types, and we are experienced in the particular care required for older, more delicate natural stone. Every job begins with an honest assessment and a clear quotation — we will never recommend work that is not necessary or achievable.
- Leaning, sunken, or unstable memorials
- Cracked or chipped stonework
- Lichen, algae, moss, and biological growth
- General soiling, staining, and weathering
- Worn, shallow, or illegible inscriptions
- Faded or missing lead and paint infill
- Damaged or missing vases and fittings
- Kerb sets requiring re-bedding or repair
- Memorials with severe structural fractures through the stone body
- Memorials where the stone has spalled or delaminated beyond repair
- Installations where the grave owner's permission cannot be confirmed

In cases where restoration is not possible, we will advise you on replacement options and can supply a new memorial to match the original as closely as possible.
Our Restoration Process
01
Initial Assessment
We begin with a thorough inspection of the memorial — assessing the type and extent of soiling, any structural damage, cracks, chips, or loose fixings, and the condition of the inscription. We will advise you honestly on what is achievable and provide a clear, no-obligation quotation before any work begins.
02
Re-fixing & Stabilisation
Where a memorial has become unstable, leaning, or has suffered structural damage, we carry out all necessary re-fixing work before any cleaning or restoration begins. This may involve re-bedding the base, repairing or replacing fixings, or consolidating cracked sections using specialist stone adhesives.
03
Cleaning
We use only methods and products appropriate to the stone type. For granite and polished marble, we use specialist stone cleaning solutions applied by hand. For natural stone, limestone, and sandstone, we use low-pressure washing and biological cleaning agents that remove lichen, algae, and moss without damaging the surface. We never use high-pressure washing on delicate or aged stone.
04
Inscription Re-cutting
Over time, inscriptions can become shallow, worn, or difficult to read. We are able to re-cut existing lettering to restore its original depth and clarity, and can also add new inscriptions to existing memorials — for example, when a second interment takes place. All lettering is hand-finished to match the original style as closely as possible.
05
Lead & Paint Infill
Many older memorials have inscriptions filled with lead or painted lettering. We can re-fill worn lead lettering and re-paint inscriptions in traditional black, white, or gold to restore the original appearance. This is one of the most effective ways to dramatically improve the legibility and appearance of an older memorial.
06
Final Inspection & Report
Once all work is complete, we carry out a final inspection and provide you with a written report detailing the work undertaken. We will also advise on any ongoing maintenance that may help preserve the memorial in the years ahead.
Granite & Polished Marble
The most durable and easiest to restore. Specialist cleaning solutions remove biological growth and staining without affecting the polished surface. Inscriptions can be re-cut and re-gilded. Lead infill can be replaced.
Natural Stone, Limestone & Sandstone
Requires a gentler approach. We use low-pressure washing and biological cleaning agents that work over time rather than abrasive or high-pressure methods. Particular care is taken with carved detail and lettering.
Slate
Slate responds well to careful cleaning and the natural colour is usually fully recoverable. Inscriptions can be re-painted or re-gilded. Structural repairs to cracked slate require specialist consolidation techniques.
